BAY TO BREAKERS
There are thousands and thousands of regular races and there are even dozens of nude runs where you can compete in an officially sanctioned naked 5K, and then there is the Bay to Breakers. It’s held every May in San Francisco. This 7.46 mile (12K) race starts near San Francisco Bay and finishes on the Pacific Ocean, crossing one of San Francisco’s biggest hills en route. It started in 1906 to life the spirits of the citizens after the huge earthquake, and is now the longest running race in the world. Participation has been as little as 50 (during WWII) and up to 110,000 runners.
There are serious runners who compete for prizes and times. Most are clothed, but a few are naked. There are recreational runners who compete for exercise and fun, a nd party runners who come for the 7 mile long party that includes music, drinks and plenty of public nudity. And sometimes there’s a mixture of all of the above.
Some of the established nudist groups participate, generally wearing lime green hats, and doing the run totally naked. They’re generally older, and based on bodies, aren’t frequent runners. But they are having fun. And of course there are a few older, single guys who get naked and wander around hoping to have their picture taken.
But the real fun is with those who take the time to develop some costume and theme ideas for their naked day on the streets of San Francisco. Here are some of the ideas we like best.
BODY PAINT
It starts when the participating guys and girls get totally naked, pick up some body paint and get creative. Some do designs, some do total body coverage in paint, some create costumes which make it look like they’re clothed, while cruising totally naked through San Francisco.
NAKED COSTUMES
They’re not quite totally nude, but definitely in the naturist spirit. We’ve seen special hats including a entire flock of naked women wearing flamingo hats, nude college girls wearing nothing but inflatable life rings, and naked guys dressed as superheros with a cape, but nothing else. They add to the fun and the spirit of the day and are a great way to be imaginative and naked at the same time.
NOT QUITE NAKED COSTUMES
With the huge number of college students and young adults participating in the event, you can expect nudity and parties everywhere. You won’t be disappointed. Many of them create themes where everyone dresses (or undresses) to fit the theme, and often build a float (in order to wheel ice chests and beer kegs along the race route) that fits the theme.
You’ll find lots of scantily clad pirates, naked cavemen and cavewomen with very small loin clothes and usually a group of bbq chefs wearing only a cooking apron so you know what buns are coming with your burger.
PARTICIPATING
The only thing required to participate is to register at www.BaytoBreakers.com. If you’ve got some friends, sign up as a group. It’s more fun that way. If you’re planning to run quickly, go totally naked or create a simple costume or body paint that won’t get in the way. If you’re just there for the fun, let your naked imagination run wild and come up with a great costume. The better the costume, the more parties you’ll get invited to along the race route.
