Terra Cotta InnTerra Cotta Inn is a quiet, intimate resort where hotel rooms surround a swimming pool, grassy area and spa. You can visit for just a day and lounge by the pool, but it's more fun to reserve a room and spend a few days, or a week. It’s in Palm Springs, set further from the mountains so views are better and you get more sunshine. The beautiful setting and attentive care of owners Tom and Mary Clare Mulhall make it worth the extra few minutes in the car. The crowd is all couples, mostly in their 40’s and 50’s. A few younger couples are also there, but this isn’t a party hotel, so if you want non-stop action, Terra Cotta isn’t for you.

All of the lounge chairs are arranged around the pool. The ones closest to the hotel rooms (far side of the pool from where you enter) are under the misting system which keep things cool on really hot days. In the winter, they also have heat lamps for those rare days when the Palm Springs sun can’t do the job by itself. If the hotel is full it can be a little bit crowded, but we’ve always found lounge chairs available and you can move them around to create your own space.
Just to the side of the pool area is a massage area. The reception desk will be delighted to book one for you. It’s a bit close to the pool and not as private as we’d like…but there’s no denying that a nude massage under the desert sun is a magical experience and you soon forget there are other people anywhere near you.
The hosts, Tom and Mary Clare, are almost always around and universally helpful. Just ask and they’ll do their best to help you. Since the hotel doesn’t have a restaurant – they arrange for a local restaurant to deliver sandwiches and salads for lunch each day. You can order in the morning and have it brought to your lounge chair around lunchtime. The food is good and very reasonably priced. Since they have no bar, you’re welcome to bring your own beverages. We found a small ice chest full of beer and a chilled bottle of chardonnay the perfect accessory, (along with your suntan lotion and beach towel).
In late afternoon the hosts come around with wine and snacks. A very civilized way to wind up the day as the sun starts to sink behind the mountains.
Day use
If you want to come for just the day, the cost is currently $30. You can come at 10 and they ask that you leave about 5. They keep one of the rooms open for day use
visitors so you can leave your clothes in the room. There is also a bathroom and shower to freshen up before you leave. Overnight guests can linger as long as they want, which is a wonderful thing to do on a warm Palm Springs evening.
Terra Cotta History
The resort was originally built as a celebrity hideaway by the famous architect Albert Frey, and visitors included Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Spencer Tracy, Desi and Lucy, and many more. Hollywood celebrities still visit from time to time knowing they can have a relaxed and carefree day.
Conclusion
Overall, Terra Cotta is a great nudist resort hotel. It’s fun, friendly and relaxed. It’s a little further from downtown Palm Springs and the great restaurants and shops – but you can be there in 10 minutes in a car. The owner / hosts are caring, attentive and committed to making sure you have a great time.
